How to split a bill with friends, step by step

DiviCuenta reads the receipt, adds the extras and shares the total by what each person had. Here are the steps, and below, how each sum is done.

Split a bill

From photo to WhatsApp in five steps

  1. Snap the receipt

Tap “Scan a receipt or bill” and photograph the itemized bill. If you paid by card, add the card slip too: that's where the tip, discounts by law and the charged total come from. Several photos are fine, even overlapping. Or type the items, or just the total.

  2. Check the items

The app shows what it read: each item's name, quantity and price. Tap any of them to fix it. At the top it tells you whether the items add up to the receipt, or how much is missing.

  3. Add the extras

An extra discount (a bank or card promo, as a percentage or an amount), the tip and discounts by law, when they apply. If the receipt or the slip shows them, they're already filled in.

  4. Choose how to split

Add the people and choose whether everyone pays the same or each pays for their own. For their own, tap each plate and mark who had it; if it was shared, mark everyone. Mark who paid, too.

  5. Share the result

Send the summary image with a link on WhatsApp. Everyone sees their part and who to pay, without installing anything. There's also a link for each person, with their amount up front.

How each share is worked out

The same rules for every receipt, in this order:

  1. Subtotal

The items added up, with any discount printed on their own lines.

  2. Discount

The receipt's, plus any extra you add, comes off the subtotal.

  3. Tip

Worked out on the discounted bill.

  4. Discounts by law (when they apply)

If paying by card refunds part of a tax, it comes off the discounted bill, never the tip. It's taken from the slip, or the app works it out with the right percentage.

  5. Card slip total

If you match what the card was charged, the difference of a few cents shows as “Rounding”.

  6. Each person's share

Everyone pays in proportion to what they had. A shared plate is split between the people who had it, anything unassigned between everyone, and cents are allocated so the shares add up to exactly the total.

An example with numbers

Ana, Beto and Caro have dinner at a grill, leave a 10% tip and pay by card. Each ordered their own plate and they shared the rest.
